A 10-0 Mariners Domination

Written by Grace Penner

The Mariners destroyed their opponents on the ice in a 10-0 win, proving that they are in fact the #1 team in the BCIHL. SFU Red Leafs did not succeed in putting their name on the scoreboard Saturday, February 28th, at Nanaimo Ice Centre.

The crowd was filled with white jerseys, scarves, shirts, and hats for our White-Out theme.. Fans came out to celebrate the Mariners Seniors; Ethan Jones, Carson Erhardt, Noah Danforth, Austin Daniels, and Jeremy Robar.

First period started with a great introduction of the teamwork displayed on the ice with a goal from Hunter Burgeson after a great pass from Davis Sato. The Mariner’s continued to keep two men on every Red Leafs player when they were in possession of the puck.

Shortly after, Ethan Jones whips around the back of the net and passes it to Erhardt with a quick release into the net. At this point, there’s only been three shots on net, and two are successful goals.

Blake Power makes a pass from the top of the zone as Aiden Corbett skates across to land it in the back of the net. Not only is Mariner’s goalie, Matthew Fleet, keeping his net covered, the Mariners are showing their skill goal after goal, intimidating the Red Leafs.

A penalty is called for Red Leafs Forward Tanner Terness for cross-checking. Less than a minute later, Jones scores with an assist from Cage Newans and Brandon Modde. Just 16 minutes into the game, Jones is now tied for all-time points at 146, advancing the Mariners score to 4-0.

The period ends with shots on goal in the Mariners advantage, 15-4.

There’s no mercy given by the Mariners in the second period, they come back strong and fast. There’s a flurry of constant shots against Red Leaf’s goalie, Max Fowle, strategically finding those holes in the defense and net.

Blake Power proves just that by possessing the puck in the Mariners zone and skating the length of the ice, backhanding a shot past Fowle. Despite being one man down due to a tripping penalty against Cage Newans, Powers shows that it was no issue.

Fleet continues to cover the net corner to corner, making some fantastic saves, especially on a Red Leafs breakaway. Tyson Pauze scores his first, but not last, goal of the night with an assist by Jones and Erhardt.

Mariners Captain, #10 Ethan Jones, officially is titled the All Time Points Leader with a total of 150 points. A huge celebration breaks out on ice, this being a personal goal of Jones’s for the season. The period ends 6-0 for the Mariners with shots on goal 35-10.

Third period flies by with another four goals from the Mariners, putting them into double digits. 23 seconds in, Jones backhands it into the bottom right corner of the net, after a great pass from Ryan Hunter. Erhardt scores 10 minutes later, officially giving him the title of Most Goals Scored in VIU history at 67 goals. The Mariners bench empties to congratulate Erhardt on the ice. Jones and Erhardt are described as a threatening duo to play against, their achievements in this match demonstrating such.

Finishing off the game, Corbett and Pauze score the last two goals of the night. Even with 25 seconds left on the clock and the Red Leafs having a 5v3 advantage, they were unable to get anything past Fleet.

The three stars of the game are all seniors, Ethan Jones, Carson Erhardt, and Austin Daniels. Erhardt is also named the CUPE 401 Player of the Game.

The Mariners head out to Queens Park Arena to play UVIC Vikes in their first playoff game on March 6 at 3:00pm PST. Watch live on BCIHL TV or make a trip down to see our boys dominate live.
