Mighty Mariners Win Again
Written by: Grace Penner
The Mighty Mariners did it again, winning 4-2 against the TRU Wolfpack – formerly the Logan Lake Miners. This is the first time the Mariners played against the newly revamped team and they showed TRU who the title belonged to.
The first period ended in TRU’s favour after they scored on Matthew Fleet midway through. In the second period, VIU has back-to-back penalties with a tripping by Chase Cooke and a charging by Aiden Corbett. Despite the almost continuous four-minutes being one man down, Landen Stromme was able to tie up the game 1-1 with a shorthanded goal.
The third period started off with two filled penalty boxes. Cage Newans and Corbett skated to the box for roughing and Spencer Bell for boarding. Two TRU players were given the same minor for roughing. Having a man advantage, TRU was able to take the lead 2-1.
Two minutes later once another TRU player is put in the box for cross-checking, Mathieu Catellier ties up the score once again after a battle in front of the opposing net.
Anxious to not extend into overtime, the Mariners use the remaining time to continue to attack the offensive zone. After Davis Sato takes the faceoff, the puck makes it way to Hunter Burgeson from behind where he has a clear shot to the back of the net.
TRU, desperate to even up the score once again, pull their goalie with just shy of two minutes left in the game. Stromme aims for his second goal of the night with an empty netter, insuring their lead for the night, 4-2.
The Mariners led shots on goal 55-21. The CUPE 401 Player of the Game was Landen Stromme.
The Mariners are on the road October 23 vs. SFU Red Leafs, October 24 against Okanagan Lakers, and October 30 against UVIC Vikes. They will return home to play UVIC Vikes for the second time that weekend on October 31st at Nanaimo Ice Centre – costumes encouraged.
